History*
Emanual County, the 39th county formed in Georgia, was named for former governor David Emanuel.
East Georgia College, a two-year unit of the University System of Georgia with a 1992 enrollment of 893, is located in Swainsboro. The Swainsboro Technical Institute, with an enrollment of 3,600 in 1995, is also located in the city.
The Emanuel County Courthouse has been destroyed by fire five times -- in 1841, 1855, 1857, 1919, and 1938.
The George L. Smith, II, State Park is located in Emanuel County.
