Tobacco Use Prevention Program
Mission
The mission of the Tobacco Use Prevention Program is to reduce the use of tobacco and the burden it causes from related illness and disease in Georgia by coordinating strategy in tobacco use prevention and control, provide technical assistance and training on policy development, program interventions, communications strategies and serve as a resource center for tobacco issues.
Tobacco is the number one preventable cause of death, killing more Americans each year than alcohol, cocaine, crack, heroin, homicide, suicide, car accidents, fires, and AIDS combined. The Program has adopted a national philosophy of changing environmental factors to reduce tobacco use.
Collaboration: Coalition effort
The Program provides support to local programs and coalitions in all 18 Public Health districts, the statewide coalition for tobacco use prevention (the Georgia Alliance for Tobacco Use Prevention), American Cancer Society, American Lung Association, American Heart Association, Georgia Ethnic Health Network along with 50 youth group and coalitions throughout the state. This coalition serves as a forum for developing and carrying out strategies that focus on protecting people from secondhand smoke, preventing tobacco use among youth, and encouraging people who smoke to quit.
Components of Georgia’s Comprehensive Tobacco Control Program
The goal of the Georgia Tobacco Use Prevention Use Program is to reduce disease, disability, and death related to tobacco use by addressing four goal areas outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
- Preventing the initiation of tobacco use among young people.
- Promoting quitting among young people and adults.
- Eliminating nonsmokers’ exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS).
- Identifying and eliminating the disparities related to tobacco use and its effects among different population groups.
