The SIDS/OID Information, Support and Referral Program currently offers eight types of training:
Reducing the Risk of SIDS and Family Grief Support in the Child Care Setting
This 2-hour program prepares Child Care Center Directors and staff to
- Know what SIDS is and what it is not
- Understand and support American Academy of Pediatrics
recommendations for reducing the risk of SIDS and other infant deaths
- Understand requirements of new child care infant safe sleep regulations
- Understand appropriate protocol should a SIDS emergency occur in your facility
- Appropriately support families, staff and other children at your center should a death occur
- Effectively disseminate information about SIDS risk reduction strategies to center families and the community
Coping with Sudden Infant Death
This program (in 2 hour or ˝ day program format) prepares public health nurses and other mental health professionals, clergy, funeral directors and others, to work with and support families who have suffered an infant loss. The program prepares professionals to:
- Understand the impact of SIDS and infant loss on the family system
- Understand the phases of grief and the basic tasks of mourning
- Become knowledgeable about infant death scene investigations and protocols
- Understand home visit guidelines for bereavement support nurses and others
- Effectively comfort grieving families
- Help impart stress reduction measures
- Identify signs of families or individuals in crisis
- Identify additional peer and professional resources for bereavement support

First Responder Training for Sudden Infant Death
This 2-3 hour session explores the differences between SIDS and other types of infant death, including child abuse. SIDS information and research are reviewed as well as recommended protocol for handling the emergency surrounding a sudden infant death. Understanding the importance and components of a death scene investigation, grief support and case management issues are reviewed. CEUs available.
SIDS Risk Reduction and Family Grief Support Program for Nurses
This 2 hour program worth 2.4 nursing contact hours prepares nurses in a variety of setting to:
- Accurately define SIDS
- Understand Triple Risk Research model of SIDS diagnosis
- Understand SIDS risk factors
- Components of the Infant Safe Sleep and SIDS Risk Reduction campaigns
- Review of Hospital and outpatient setting opportunities for risk reduction education
- Understanding of the impact of infant loss on the family system
- Role of local health department and hospital follow-up in bereavement support
- Effectively comfort grieving families
- Identify signs of families or individuals in crisis
- Identify additional peer and professional resources for bereavement support
Peer Contact Training
This 4 hour session is designed to provide up-to-date information and statistics as well as skills practice for parents who have survived the experience of a sudden infant death and are ready to help newly bereaved families. Topics include:
- SIDS and sudden infant death statistics
- grief and bereavement
- peer contact principles and skills practice
Sudden and Unexplained Infant Death - Reducing the Risk and the Community Response: Impact on the Family System
This 1 - 2 hour training is a basic overview of SIDS, risk reduction strategies and community support for bereaved families. The program includes:
- An overview of what SIDS is and is not
- Understanding the risk factors for SIDS
- Review of SIDS risk reduction strategies and the Back to Sleep Campaign
- Understanding SIDS and other infant death grief
- Skills to support bereaved families
- Information on educational materials and grief support resources for families in your community
- The importance of spreading the word about how to reduce SIDS deaths
SIDS Basics
This 1 hour session overviews the latest information and research on SIDS and SIDS risk reduction. Simple and clear recommendations for safe sleep practices are discussed. For professional and lay audiences.
Grief RecoveryŽ Seminar
This 90 minute to 2 hour session overviews the principles of grief recovery as defined by the Grief Recovery Handbook (written by James & Friedman; released by Harper Collins in 1998). Myths regarding grief are explored and a new approach to completing unfinished communication is defined. This overview session is intended to provide enough information for participants to decide whether or not to attend the 10-week outreach session.
