Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

Back to Sleep

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or “SIDS” is a type of sudden unexpected infant death or “SUID”. Each year in the United States, there are about 4,200 SUIDs. Infant deaths labeled “SIDS” make up about 50% of these deaths. “SIDS” is a diagnosis of exclusion. A baby’s death is called SIDS if no cause of death is found after a complete investigation including: (1) a case investigation, (2) an autopsy, (3) a death scene investigation, and (4) a review of clinical history.

My baby died of SIDS, how could I have prevented this death?

The cause of accurately labeled SIDS deaths is not known. Therefore, it is impossible to prevent these deaths at this time. However, research does show that families that have had a baby die of SIDS are at greater risk of having other babies die of SIDS. Although there is no definite way to prevent these types of deaths, parents should always use safe sleep best practices to create the safest sleeping environment possible for their babies. Safe sleep best practices can be found here, on Healthychildren.org, or on the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Safe to Sleep Campaign
