Perinatal Health

Responsibility for the state perinatal program resides in the Office of Women's Health Services. Staff provide training, technical assistance and programmatic direction for county health departments and many community programs. Coordination with the Office of Nutrition, WIC Program, Immunization Program, Epidemiology Section, Child Health and numerous non-profit agencies with focus on women and children provides a comprehensive approach to women's health.

To promote the health of women and infants by assisting them in accessing risk appropriate, comprehensive, quality perinatal services.

Perinatal Health Services

Babies Born Healthy

A state funded program that pays for the prenatal care of mothers that do not qualify for health insurance or Medicaid. The program is available in 19 health districts across the state. For more information on the Babies Born Healthy program, see this fact sheet.

Perinatal Case Management (PCM)

A partnership with Division of Public Health, Office of Women's Health Services and Department of Community Health, providing the only case management program for pregnant Medicaid women in Georgia. The Office of Women's Health Services provides policy development, training and monitoring of the perinatal case management program in nineteen health districts. Pregnancy Related Services (PRS)

A Medicaid program focused on reducing infant illness and death rate and improving the quality of life for new mothers and their infants. The program provides in-home health assessments and teaching for women who have recently delivered a baby. A physical assessment is done on both the mother and baby followed by education on breastfeeding, SIDS reduction, infant feeding, well-child routine care, and family planning.

Regional Perinatal Centers

A public/private partnership with six designated regional centers to provide a system of comprehensive perinatal care services for pregnant women, their fetuses and neonates in all risk categories.For more information on the Regional Perinatal Centers, see this fact sheet.

Resource Mothers

An outreach and education program administered by Women's Health and funded by Medicaid. The program focuses on pregnant and parenting teens by providing trained, experienced women and men to provide guidance and support. The majority of these positions are filled by former TANF recipients who bring first hand knowledge and experience to the challenges faced by many teens at risk.
