Electronic Health Record Incentive Program (“Meaningful Use”)

“Meaningful Use” Submissions of Immunization Data

Included in the strategies for demonstrating “meaningful use” of the EHR systems is the submission of immunization data to immunization registries or immunization information systems.

The Georgia Registry of Immunization Transactions and Services (GRITS) is an immunization registry designed to consolidate a resident of Georgia’s immunization records into one complete, accurate and definitive immunization record. Currently, GRITS receives data from hospital systems, health care plans, vital records, local health departments, private providers, Medicaid, and schools. The data provided by GRITS is intended to give individuals, families and health professionals the tools needed to make sound medical decisions.

GRITS provides many benefits such as:

  • Consolidating vaccination records from multiple providers into one record
  • Providing updated recommendations for immunization scheduling based on the CDC recommendations
  • Serves as a great tool for Vaccines for Children (VFC) providers to streamline vaccine management and improve accountability

Submission of immunization data is requested from all health care providers that perform immunizations.

Sending information to GDPH electronically does not by itself satisfy the Meaningful Use criteria. The information must be sent in according to nationally established formatting standards that have been devised to optimize the exchange of health-related information between healthcare information systems.

More information on the submission of immunization data can be obtained by contacting: immreg@dhr.state.ga.us or calling 404-657-3158.
