There are many risks of premature death in Georgia; none is greater than our roadways. Motor vehicle injuries are a leading cause of death in Georgia. In 2007, 56 children age 0-14 died and over 10,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes in Georgia. Thirty-nine percent of fatal child occupants were not buckled up. Hospitalization charges for the same period for children age 0-14 in Georgia due to motor vehicle traffic injuries were over $23.4 million..

The Child Occupant Safety Project strives to ensure that Georgia's children are safe while riding in motor vehicles. Income eligible families in 154 Georgia counties receive child safety seats and education in their use through the Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Mini-Grant. The Keeping Kids Safe Hospital Training program promotes discharge of newborns in appropriate child restraints.  The project also educates and provides technical assistance to partners regarding safe transportation of children with special medical needs.  The Safe School Buses Program addresses challenging issues including transportation of pre-school age children and children with special health care needs.  Through regional Traffic Enforcement Networks, the project also works to increase law enforcement officers’ understanding and enforcement of Georgia’s child passenger safety law.
