Family Planning Services in Georgia

Family Planning services are provided directly by county health departments and contracted agencies utilizing various combinations of federal, state, and locally supported staff. Services are provided in a private, customer-friendly atmosphere. Confidentiality of clients is respected and protected. Medical services covered under the Family Planning Program include:

  • Comprehensive assessment including history and examination, for males and females
  • Provision of FDA-approved contraception, including voluntary sterilization
  • Evaluation and management of contraceptive-related problems
  • Collection of specimens for specific laboratory tests, such as Pap smears, urinalysis, hemoglobin, gonorrhea, etc.
  • Infertility assessment
  • Postpartum evaluation
  • Genetic assessment, counseling, and referral
  • Evaluation and management of sexually transmitted diseases and common gynecological problems
  • Pregnancy testing and counseling

In addition to medical services, the Family Planning Program provides the following educational and/or counseling services:

  • Abstinence and pregnancy postponement counseling
  • Reproductive and preventive health education
  • Adoption awareness
  • Self breast/testicular examination
  • Counseling on risk factors associated with sexually transmitted diseases and HIV
  • Substance abuse counseling
  • Tobacco cessation counseling
  • Violence and sexual abuse counseling and referral
  • Counseling on risks and benefits of contraceptive methods
  • Problem-specific counseling and referral

How many people did the program serve in FY 2010?

  • 136,195 unduplicated clients including 132,877 females and 3,318 males received services
  • 60,382 unduplicated users obtained a pap smear
  • 71,728 unduplicated users received a breast examination
  • 61,891 unduplicated users were tested for Chlamydia inflection
  • 68,025 unduplicated users were tested for Gonorrhea infection
  • 18,132 unduplicated users were tested for Syphilis infection
  • 22,023 unduplicated users were tested for HIV
  • 75,965 unduplicated users received preconception counseling
  • 16,966 unduplicated users received abstinence skills training
  • 413 clients received sterilizations

The comprehensive history and risk assessment process identified women in need of alcohol and/or substance abuse evaluation and treatment services. The women served were referred to other medical providers for evaluation and treatment of problems identified during the family planning examination.
