Family Planning

Mission

The mission of the Georgia Family Planning Program is that all women and men in Georgia will have knowledge of and access to opportunities for optimal health care for themselves and their families, therefore, enabling families to plan and space their children to improve the health of women and children.

Family planning is essential to the well-being of women, men, adolescents, and the community at large. It offers individuals opportunities to plan and space their pregnancies in order to achieve personal goals and self-sufficiency.

In keeping with its mission, the Georgia Family Planning Program has developed strategies and implemented services directed toward the reduction of unintended pregnancies and improvement of birth outcomes.

Goals

The following goals have been developed to accomplish the mission of the Family Planning Program:

  • To reduce unintended pregnancies in order to avoid the poor outcomes (health, social, and economic) related to unintended pregnancies.
  • To improve birth outcomes through preconceptual health promotion.
  • To promote the health of mothers by providing basic reproductive health care to women in need.

Program Objectives

The following five-year objectives undertaken by the Family Planning Program, through collaboration and partnerships with other health care providers and agencies, are consistent with the Healthy People 2010 National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives:

  • Reduce pregnancies among girls aged 17 and younger to no more than 51 per 1,000 adolescents.
  • Reduce to no more than 30 percent the proportion of all pregnancies that are unintended.
  • Reduce the infant mortality rate to no more than seven per 1,000 live births.
  • Reduce low birth weight to an incidence of no more than five percent of live births.
  • Increase to at least 90 percent the proportion of all pregnant women who receive prenatal care in the first trimester of pregnancy.
  • Increase the number of low income women served in the GFPP by 20 percent.
  • Provide a comprehensive training program in clinical practice enhancement revenue and personnel management for family Planning providers.
