American Heart Association (AHA)
AHA is a national organization dedicated to educating and advocating for legislation to fight heart disease and stroke.

Atlanta Bicycle Campaign (ABC)
ABC is a member-supported organization working for better on-road bicycling conditions in the metro-Atlanta region. ABC promotes bicycle transportation, responsible recreational riding, and education for bicyclists and motorists alike. Involvement in regional transportation planning and complementary grass-roots organizations helps them attain their goals.

The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC)
ARC is the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the 10-county Atlanta area. The ARC covers issues regarding transportation and land use. Physical activity promoters can work with the ARC and other MPOs to encourage inclusion of sidewalks and bike lanes thus leading to the development of communities that are conducive to physical activity.

Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC)
CDC's Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity (DNPA) provides science-based activities for children and adults that address the role of nutrition and physical activity in health promotion and the prevention and control of chronic diseases; the scope of DNPA programs includes epidemiology, applied research, public health policy, surveillance, community interventions, evaluation, and communications.

Georgia Alliance for Tobacco Prevention
A coalition formed to protect and improve the health of Georgians by providing a forum in which strategies can be developed, coordinated, and implemented to prevent and reduce tobacco use.

Georgia Coalition for Physical Activity and Nutrition
The Georgia Coalition for Physical Activity and Nutrition is a collaboration of public, private, and non-profit business organizations, and businesses whose mission is to improve the health of low-income as well as all Georgians by promoting healthy eating and physical activity.

Georgia Department Natural Resources (DNR)
DNR is a Georgia state government department whose mission is to protect Georgia's natural, historic, and cultural resources; this site includes information on Georgia's commitment to greenspace and links to the state park system.

Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT)
The Georgia DOT is committed to a safe, efficient and sustainable transportation system for all users; through dedicated teamwork and responsible leadership, the agency supports economic development, environmental sensitivity and an improved quality of life for all. The Georgia DOT is a good resource for information on bicycle and pedestrian-related issues.

Georgia Dietetic Association
This is the state entity of the American Dietetic Association (ADA), the national accrediting body of registered dietitians. GDA supports professional practice groups in various areas of nutrition and disease, including CVD. This site provides information on current legislative issues regarding nutrition, specifically nutritional health care and reimbursement. GDA provides a link to the ADA website. This web site includes information on nutrition education, current news stories, educational resources.

Georgia Trails and Greenways
This website, coordinated by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, contains information on trails and greenways in Georgia and across the country. Information on funding to build and maintain trails and greenways is also provided.

Great Outdoors Recreation Pages (GORP)
GORP provides information on all types of physical activity opportunities for all 50 states, as well as across the world; information includes where to go hiking, white water rafting, walking, skiing, and more.

International Life Sciences Institute Center for Health Promotion (ILSI)
ILSI's goal is to reduce morbidity and mortality and improve the quality of life in populations around the world. ILSI's scientific strengths include its expertise in nutrition and other food-related topics. The Physical Activity and Nutrition (PAN) program for children and adolescents includes research on childhood obesity, a national survey on physical activity, a school physical activity program, a workshop on physical activity assessment, and a conference on childhood obesity.

Kansas City Community Toolbox
This web site was created by the University of Kansas Work Group on Health Promotion and Community Development in Lawrence, KS, and AHEC/Community Partners in Amherst, Massachusetts; currently, the core of the Tool Box are how-to sections, which use simple, friendly language to explain how to do the different tasks necessary for community health and development.

PATH Foundation
The PATH Foundation has built over 20 miles of greenway trails in Atlanta. PATH is dedicated to building trails so that all Atlanta residents have the opportunity for safe recreation and non-polluting transportation. This site contains greenway trail information for the state of Georgia, focusing on metro Atlanta.

Partners for a Walkable America
The Partnership for a Walkable America is an alliance of public and private organizations, and individuals who are committed to promoting the changes needed to make America more walkable. This organization sponsors the Walk Our Children to School Day event each year.

Pedestrians Educating Drivers (PEDS)
Founded in 1996, PEDS is a grass roots advocacy group dedicated to making metropolitan Atlanta safe and accessible for all pedestrians.

Rails to Trails Conservancy
Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is a 13-year-old nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching America's communities and countryside by creating a nationwide network of public trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors.

The National Safe Kids Campaign
Safe Kid's mission is to prevent the number one killer of children — unintentional injury. Georgia has about 50 coalitions throughout the state dedicated to educating adults and children, providing safety devices to families in need, and advocating for laws to empower families and communities to protect children ages 14 and under. Some local coalitions provide programs to teach children how to ride a bicycle safely, including how to correctly wear a bike helmet, and how to safely cross the street. (A great opportunity for promoting physical activity!)

The University of Georgia Family and Consumer Sciences Extension (FACS)
FACS educates families to become healthier, more productive, financially independent and environmentally responsible. The Nutrition and Health program works to improve nutrition and exercise habits to decrease risk of chronic disease. The Food Selection and Buying Program strives to teach consumers to make confident and informed selections among alternative foods and evaluates media reports related to the safety and quality of foods. The Family Nutrition Program is an education program directed towards low-income Georgians.

Women and Heart Disease
An atlas of racial and ethnic disparities in mortality which provides critical data on geographic, racial, and ethnic inequalities in women's heart disease death rates for the five major racial and ethnic groups.
