Be Active

Be Active. Move More.

An active lifestyle doesn't mean that you sweat for hours a day at the gym. Instead, simply move more.

At work, try the following:

  • Take the stairs to a meeting
  • Walk to a co-worker's desk instead of phoning or emailing
  • Pick up/deliver materials yourself versus using a courier
  • Make copies or fill up your water bottle often
  • Plan a 'walk & talk' meeting

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American College of Sports Medicine recommend that adults engage in moderate-intensity physical activities for at least 30 minutes on 5 or more days of the week.

Moderate physical activity means you're feeling warm, breathing hard and sweating as you would while walking briskly or biking. View other moderate intensity activities.

Strapped for time? Increase your activity intensity and get the same benefits in 20 minutes for 3 days a week. Instead of walking, try jogging or bike up hills instead of on flat ground. Need something more low-key? Engage in light intensity activities such as strolling, dusting or gardening for 60 minutes a day on most days of the week.

If this sounds overwhelming, then try little bursts of activity to count towards your daily requirement. Add up minutes in a daily log or use a pedometer to monitor your steps.

Remember, no one expects you to go from zero to 30 or 60 minutes in one day or even one week. Do what you can do now and increase 10 minutes each week until you reach your goal.

Most importantly, do something you like to do! Whether its gardening, walking, or dancing …enjoy and have fun!
