Let’s face it – going to the doctor is never really fun. And as an adult, doctors no longer pass out lollipops and special prizes for good behavior.

But, your health matters. Just like getting the oil changed in your car, a manicure, or a haircut, maintenance visits are important to help us look and feel our best. And regular visits can help your healthcare provider detect health issues early before they become a problem.

When visiting with your healthcare provider, remember to:

  • Share your family history to alert your healthcare provider of any possible genetic medical conditions.
  • Be truthful about aches, pains, behaviors and medications. Your doctor needs all the facts to make accurate diagnosis and recommendations.
  • Voice your concerns about any diagnosis, medication or other treatments a healthcare provider may prescribe.
  • Ask questions and remember there are no “dumb” questions when it comes to your health. If you don’t feel comfortable asking questions on the spot, bring someone with you or ask for a good time to phone with questions.
  • Clarify until you have a clear understanding of your diagnosis and next steps. Repeat directions, but in your own words and make sure that you know any action items required on your part.
