Tips to Better Breast Pumping

  • Follow a set routine for pumping. Sit in the same place at the same time each day. This may help condition your milk ejection.
  • Relax. Find a quiet place, listen to relaxing music or do anything else that helps you feel peaceful.
  • Visualize your baby and think about he/she breastfeeding. Some women find that thinking about the baby will stimulate greater milk production. Bringing a blanket or piece of clothing that smells like your baby may also help.
  • Pump frequently. Experts recommend every three hours or as often as the baby feeds to help stimulate milk production.
  • Make sure you have the right pump. If you notice that the volume of milk is decreasing, it may be your pump. Check with the manufacturer for replacement parts or contact a lactation specialist.
  • Practice breast feeding before returning to work. During this time, you can learn about the breast pump equipment and begin storing milk before you return to work.

Breastmilk Storage Tips
  • Store in air tight hard-sided plastic or glass containers; storing in 2-4 ounce amounts may help reduce waste
  • Date storage containers to ensure freshness; refrigerated milk will keep up to 8 days and frozen milk for up to 2 weeks
  • Refrigerate previously thawed milk and use within 24 hours, do not re-freeze
