TEAM Georgia Launches Safe Driving Campaign
Team Georgia, a safe and sober transportation coalition and partner of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, launched its 2011 Safe Holiday Campaign on Thursday, December 1, in Smyrna. The campaign encourages safe driving practices during the holiday, with an emphasis on safe holiday celebrations. Area bars and restaurants will join the campaign by displaying Safe Holiday information, providing free rides home for impaired drives, and offering free non-alcoholic drinks to designated drivers. Bans on Soda Don’t Deter
Restricting the sale of sodas and other sugar-sweetened beverages in schools doesn’t make a dent in students’ overall consumption of those high-calorie drinks, research published recently finds. A study in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine surveyed 6,900 students across the nation. Whether kids went to school in state where sales of sodas but not other sugar-sweetened beverages were prohibited, in states where all sugar-sweetened beverages were prohibited or in states where no policy was in place, 85 percent reported having consumed a sugar-sweetened beverage during the seven days preceding the survey.
