CDC Launches Campaign to Increase HIV Testing
Nearly three out of four Americans living with HIV do not have their infection under control, according to a new CDC Vital Signs™ report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). The authors say the low percentage is because 1 in 5 people with HIV do not realize they are infected and, of those who are aware, only 51 percent receive ongoing medical care and treatment.

"While we have known that viral suppression can be achieved with proper HIV treatment and care, today's new Vital Signs data highlight the challenges our country faces in keeping HIV-positive Americans in the care they need to control the virus," said CDC Director Thomas R. Frieden, M.D., M.P.H. Focusing on Older Drivers

The ability to remain active in the community - shopping, working or volunteering - is important to many older adults. The Georgia Department of Public Health's (DPH) Office of Injury Prevention's (OIP) Older Driver Safety Program is recognizing December 5 - 9 as Older Driver Safety Awareness Week. With funding through the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, OIP identifies and implements evidence-based strategies that balance the mobility needs of older drivers with their own safety and the safety of other road users, including cyclists and pedestrians.

"Georgia has one of the highest motor vehicle crash fatality rates for older adults in the country," said Jennifer Curry, program consultant for the Older Driver Safety Program. "With the increasing number of Georgia residents over the age of 65 combined with the lack of sustainable transportation alternatives in the state, DPH is working to develop statewide activities that support the reduction of older driver crashes and fatalities."
