DPH, GEMA Mobile App Wins Web Health Award

The Ready Georgia mobile application created by the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency was recently awarded Silver in the 2012 Winter/Spring Web Health Awards Mobile Application: Location-Based Resource category.

The goal of the Web Health Awards is to recognize high-quality digital health resources for consumers and health professionals. The awards program is organized by the Health Information Resource Center, a clearinghouse for professionals who work in consumer health fields.

Gold, Silver, Bronze and Merit certificates are awarded. Using a rating scale of one to 100 points, a panel of health technology professionals judge entries based on content, format, success in reaching the targeted health audience and overall quality.

The Ready Georgia mobile app is a free application available for both iPhone and Android devices and provides everything from up-to-the-minute weather and hazard alerts based on a user's location, to customizable emergency preparedness checklists.

Before an emergency, app users can create customizable checklists of emergency supplies, make disaster plans for their families and check flood risk levels and historic tornado data near their location. During an emergency, the app will deliver severe weather alerts, show the locations of open Red Cross shelters and provide information on what to do during different types of disasters.

The Web Health Award is well-deserved for such a robust and important tool to keep Georgians safe.
