The WIC team of North Georgia Health District 1-2, based in Dalton, is an active
partner with the Northwest Georgia Breastfeeding Coalition and plays an integral
role in the successful breastfeeding conferences the coalition coordinates
annually.
This year's
conference was in Dalton on March 28, when the coalition presented
Breastfeeding: Protecting Mothers' Life Long Health
by guest
speaker Kathleen Kendall-Tackett, Ph.D., an award-winning health
psychologist, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, specialist
in mind-body medicine and author of a wide body of publications addressing
trauma, women's health, depression and breastfeeding.
More than
200 professionals who work with breastfeeding mothers attended the
conference, including physicians, nurses, lactation consultants, dietitians,
certified nurse midwives, La Leche League leaders, WIC staff, nutritionists
and nurse practitioners.
Kendall-Tackett spoke on issues such as the impact long-term child abuse may
have on a breastfeeding woman, the implications of poor sleep on
breastfeeding, steps that can be taken to address maternal fatigue, the
positive effects touch has on infant feeding and various treatments for
depression in breastfeeding women.
"We are
proud to be part of the Northwest Georgia Breastfeeding Coalition because of
the amazing support it lends to breastfeeding in this region," said Carol
Hendrix, WIC breastfeeding coordinator. "This was an outstanding seminar,
which provided healthcare professionals with vital information that will
make a positive difference in the lives of breastfeeding mothers and their
babies."
