County health rankings highlight 
successes, challenges in Georgia

The 2013 County Health Rankings were released on March 20, showing counties across the U.S. how they stack up against other counties in their states.

 

The rankings, compiled annually by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, are based on 30 measures of health and well-being. Some of the data are measures directly related to health, including premature death, tobacco use, obesity and sexually transmitted infections. Other factors, such as education, jobs and crime, may not seem like health matters, but numerous studies have shown that these factors often impact the health of a county's residents.

Walk With Ease program highlighted 

 

Walk With Ease program participant Ingrid Hardee shares her story with CNN AccentHealth reporter Mariana Hoysa.
Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities employee Ingrid Hardee no longer walks with a significant limp and is also losing weight, thanks to The Arthritis Foundation's Walk With Ease program.

 

Hardee was diagnosed with osteoarthritis about three years ago in both knees and describes the pain as "very uncomfortable." However, in just two short weeks, Hardee is seeing the benefits of the program the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) is offering in partnership with the Arthritis Foundation.

Public health departments around the country are now seeking a new stamp of approval for their services: national accreditation status.

 

The Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) recently awarded accreditation status to state, tribal, local and territorial health departments across the U.S. The national program, supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), aims to advance the quality and performance of the nation's public health departments.

Commissioner urges providers to sign up for emergency email alerts 

In times of public health emergencies, communication is a critical part of keeping Georgians safe and healthy. The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) is hoping to optimize its ability to respond to emergencies by encouraging Georgia's dentists to sign up for the department's email alert system.

 

The system allows DPH to communicate vital health information quickly and efficiently with the state's health care providers during emergencies or disasters..

 

In a letter, DPH Commissioner Brenda Fitzgerald, M.D., urged dental professionals to enroll in the opt-in communication system by visiting http://www.dph.ga.gov/connect/.

The nursing profession remains overwhelmingly female, but the representation of men has increased as the demand for nurses has grown over the last several decades, according to a U.S. Census Bureau study released today..

 

The new study shows the proportion of male registered nurses has more than tripled since 1970, from 2.7 percent to 9.6 percent, and the proportion of male licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses has more than doubled from 3.9 percent to 8.1 percent.
