County health rankings
highlight
successes, challenges in
Georgia
The
2013 County Health Rankings were released on March 20,
showing counties across the U.S. how they stack up against
other counties in their states.
The rankings, compiled
annually by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the
University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, are
based on 30 measures of health and well-being. Some of the
data are measures directly related to health, including
premature death, tobacco use, obesity and sexually
transmitted infections. Other factors, such as education,
jobs and crime, may not seem like health matters, but
numerous studies have shown that these factors often impact
the health of a county's residents.

Ingrid Hardee shares her story with CNN
AccentHealth reporter Mariana Hoysa. |
Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and
Developmental Disabilities employee Ingrid
Hardee no longer walks with a significant limp
and is also losing weight, thanks to The
Arthritis Foundation's Walk With Ease program.
Hardee was
diagnosed with osteoarthritis about three years
ago in both knees and describes the pain as
"very uncomfortable." However, in just two short
weeks, Hardee is seeing the benefits of the
program the Georgia Department of Public Health
(DPH) is offering in partnership with the
Arthritis Foundation.

Public health
departments around the country are now seeking a new
stamp of approval for their services: national
accreditation status.
The
Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) recently
awarded accreditation status to state, tribal, local
and territorial health departments across the U.S.
The national program, supported by the Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation and the U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC), aims to advance the
quality and performance of the nation's public
health departments.

Commissioner urges providers to sign up for emergency email
alerts

In
times of public health emergencies, communication is a
critical part of keeping Georgians safe and healthy. The
Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) is hoping to
optimize its ability to respond to emergencies by
encouraging Georgia's dentists to sign up for the
department's email alert system.
The system allows DPH to communicate vital
health information quickly and efficiently with
the state's health care providers during
emergencies or disasters..
In a letter, DPH Commissioner Brenda Fitzgerald,
M.D., urged dental professionals to enroll in
the opt-in communication system by visiting

registered nurses has more than tripled since
1970, from 2.7 percent to 9.6 percent, and the
