Confirming Rapid HIV Test Results

The Georgia Department of Public Health now offers a webinar on the use of dried blood spots to confirm HIV-1 after a preliminary positive result on a rapid HIV test. This webinar is primarily aimed at organizations that implement HIV testing in non-laboratory, community settings. In addition to confirmatory HIV testing, the same dried blood spot card can also be used to collect blood to test a client for hepatitis, CD4 count, viral load and much more. Public Health Remembers C. Everett Koop, M.D.

C. Everett Koop, M.D., former U.S. Surgeon General appointed by President Reagan, died on Feb. 25. He was 96. Koop is remembered as a pioneer in addressing nicotine addition, the dangers of second-hand smoke and for taking on tobacco companies over the health risks of their products. Koop openly addressed the impact of the emerging HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s to educate and empower the public about the disease. His bold leadership changed public policy and our nation's health.
