Grant Helps Expand Mobile Food Market
Fulton County will match a $25,000 grant from the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation to expand its Fulton Mobile Farmer’s Market. Operated by the Fulton County Cooperative Extension, the mobile market delivered an estimated 10,000 pounds of fresh produce to more than 900 residents over the summer. The mobile markets deliver fresh produce from local farmers to residents living in communities designated as “food deserts,” large geographic areas where mainstream grocery stores are scarce or missing. Distribution will increase from four to eight sites in 2012.

Hospital Compare Website Expands Data
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced on February 8 that its Hospital Compare website now includes central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) data reported from hospital ICUs to CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). On the website, consumers can enter a zip code and are given a list of hospitals in that area. Consumers can then select hospitals to compare patients’ hospital experiences. In many places, this is the first time consumers can see how well their local hospitals prevent CLABSIs, one of the most deadly and preventable healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).
