Georgia Violent Death Reporting System Team’s Efforts Recognized by CDC

Recently, the Georgia Violent Death Reporting System (GVDRS) has the most improved “Incidents Initiated with 180 Days of Date of Death” among all participating states in the CDC-funded National Violent Death reporting System (NVDRS). GVDRS’s incident initiation rate increased from 22 percent for 2008 to 82 percent for 2009.

Funded in 18 states, NVDRS is a population-based surveillance system that collects information about violent deaths from several different sources, including death certificates, medical examiner and/or coroner records, law enforcement records, supplemental homicide reports and crime laboratory records. The information in then pooled into a comprehensive, centralize database. The data are used to characterize violence trends and guide violence prevention programs, policies and practice
