The Task Force structure includes a Steering Committee to provide oversight for the initiative; workgroups to complete the planning and implementation of the plan; and the Department of Public HealthInternal Planning Team. Additional workgroups include the Data and Evaluation and Communication and Partnership.
“Moving to Action” Workgroups
The Nutrition and Physical Activity Plan has been divided into settings where action needs to take place:
community, faith-based, schools and early child care centers, worksites, and healthcare.
The purpose of the setting-based or “Moving to Action” workgroups is to identify 1-2 priority areas on an annual basis and develop a work planand milestones to guide the implementation of those priority areas. Workgroup co-chairs have been identified to provide leadership for each workgroup. Priority areas for the 2005/6 fiscal year have been identified by each workgroup and action plans are underway.
Community Setting Workgroup
Co-chairs: Robert Holmes, DeKalb YMCA, Leslie Rodriguez-Zeigler, Hispanic Health Coalition
- Promote availability of healthy vending choices in parks and recreation facilities and government buildings (Community Workgroup)
- Provide access to fruits and vegetables through WIC farmers markets and senior farmer's market programs (WIC, Family Health and Division of Aging)
- Peer Counselor Breastfeeding Support Program (Family Health Branch, 8 pilot sites)
Faith-based Setting Workgroup
Co-chairs: Diane Roberts Ayers, Department of Public Healthand Bethann Witcher Cottrell, Vine City Health and Housing Ministry
- Develop or adapt a toolkit targeted at faith-based organizations (FBO) to support the development of evidence-based programs for breastfeeding, healthy eating and physical activity.
- Develop a database of FBOs and other programs in each health district.
Worksite Setting Workgroup
Co-chairs: Jon Ducote, Department of Public Healthand Melodi Ford, Verizon Wireless
- Develop/adapt a worksite toolkit to be used by both the worksite and local coordinator/community to support development, implementation and evaluation of worksite wellness initiatives.
- Continue to educate local public health staff, worksites through workshops, trainings, and presentations about worksite health promotion.
School Setting Workgroup
Co-chairs: Sandra Leonard, Department of Public Health, Beth Passehl, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Christy Kay, Kids' Health Inc.
- Develop/adapt, distribute and train on existing resource guide for schools to develop wellness policies (in collaboration with Georgia Action for Healthy Kids and the Georgia Department of Education)
- Develop consensus document/position paper on the role of state DOE PE/Health Coordinator
Healthcare Setting Workgroup
Chair: Debra Kibbe, ILSI Center for
Health Promotion
- Provide training for health care providers in the areas of BMI/BMI-for-age assessment, nutrition, physical activity, breastfeeding, obesity prevention
Data and Evaluation Workgroup
- Provide technical assistance to the focus area workgroups in acquiring necessary data, identifying trends and developing appropriate evaluation indicators for the State Plan
- Develop and implement the evaluation component of Georgia's Nutrition and Physical Activity Plan including logic model development
- Assess the current status of data collection efforts for environment/policy indicators, prevalence
Communication and Partnership Workgroup
- Assist in the development of semi-annual newsletter and other communication documents/tools for Task Force members
- Develop and implement the Communication component of the State Plan
