Mumps

Mumps is an acute viral illness that can cause unilateral or bilateral swelling of the parotid glands or other salivary glands (parotitis). Salivary gland swelling is typically preceded by 3 to 5 days of fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Asymptomatic infections also occur. Not all cases of parotitis are due to mumps infection, so laboratory testing is necessary for confirmation. Any person who is not immune through previous mumps infection or vaccination can develop mumps.
