AIDS

AIDS is a disease complex characterized by HIV-virus induced cell-mediated immune deficiency. The complex includes opportunistic infections, cancers, and other conditions. Common opportunistic infections include Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia; extrapulmonary cryptococcal disease; toxoplasmosis of the central nervous system; pulmonary tuberculosis; disseminated atypical mycobacteriosis; and candidiasis of the esophagus, trachea, bronchi, or lung. Cancers include Kaposi’s sarcoma and primary lymphoma limited to the brain. Other conditions include severe wasting disease (Slim’s disease) and HIV encephalopathy (AIDS dementia complex).
